If I told you there was a pill you could take daily that reduces your stress, lowers your blood pressure, improves your blood sugar, and reduces your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke, would your take it? Exercising at least 3 to 5 times weekly has all these benefits are more. Nevertheless, most people would rather take a pill then devote a few minutes of exertion to improve their health. What is so great about exercise?
• Exercise lowers blood sugar
When you exercise the body uses sugar (glucose) for fuel. Your body becomes more sensitive to insulin when this action happens. Some people who routinely exercise are able to reduce their diabetes medications.
• Exercise improves strength.
Exercise helps build muscle in your body. Extra muscle can help your body burn more calories resulting in weight loss.
• Exercise fights stress.
Exercise releases endorphins or “happy hormones”. Releasing these hormones help to reduce mental stress in your life. Exercise also makes your body stronger to fight any physical stress.
• Exercise improves the heart.
Exercise lowers your LDL (lousy) cholesterol, raises your HDL (healthy) cholesterol and lowers your blood pressure. The benefit is improved heart health.
How much exercise do you need? Half an hour of daily walking will improve your blood sugar and one hour will promote weight loss. If you are unable to walk, try alternative exercises such as chair exercise and boxing. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Bring water and quick acting carbohydrate food with you. I have a webpage devoted to this topic if you need any more information.
