RE: Is microwave cooking safe?
I think microwaves are pretty safe. The original ones may not have has as good of protection as the new ones of today. I would worry a little about standing next to an old microwave while it was running. Actually I've heard that microwaving your meats before putting them on the grill is healthier than cooking your meats well done using only the grill.

RE: Is microwave cooking safe?
Well, With my point of view, Its true that, microwave ovens are evil and food cooked in them tastes like crap. You shouldn’t even been close to a microwave oven when it is being used, but what is a safe distance? I won’t convince anyone at home to stop using it, but I’ would like to know if I’d have to leave the kitchen when they use it to be safe. I use an electric oven instead, I think that’s safe? and food tastes much better.

RE: Is microwave cooking safe?
Hi,
The only time significant damage has been found is when a microwave oven door was not properly latched or had been tampered with, in which case it may cause serious burns or damage to the eyes. This however is rare as most ovens have a self locking safety feature which prevents this from occurring. There has been no conclusive studies proving the harmful effects of microwave ovens. There are many that show the different nutrient levels depending on how a substance is cooked but that is to be expected.

RE: Is microwave cooking safe?
Microwave ovens have become ubiquitous in the household kitchen across the United States, with more than 90 percent of households have at least one entity. Use the microwave oven is so widespread that it is almost standard practice for food manufacturers to put instructions on food packaging product. Microwave will not make food radioactive or change either its protein structure, or contaminate a manner that when the microwave radiation is absorbed by food and transformed into heat.

As far as I know, these ovens are working with high frequency waves. at those frequencies, if you stand near them, they will penetrate to your body and damage your tissues. but they damp in the air, so standing far away form them can reduce this damage. in ovens, they shield the device, that means it will absorb the waves and keeps them inside. so it minimizes the radiation dose outside the shield.

RE: Is microwave cooking safe?
I was referring to when you get your face close to an operating microwave. There's a glass wall between you and the microwaves, so we normally assume total internal reflection: that is, the microwaves are bouncing around inside the microwave, and staying inside there.
BUT, frustrated total internal reflection happens when you get your face close to the microwave. The waves will transmit through the 2nd medium (the air) to the third medium (your face) because the distance between your face and the microwave is on the order of microwaves (meters to millimeters). I don't know if enough power actually makes it through to be concerned about, but I don't NEED to put my face there, so I won't test it, personally.

I have a microwave counter, and I think more pickup 1mw/cm^2 (high needle) in the anterior part of the meter. But I have not been measured at the front of the box. It is about 4x6 cm^2 It has been the case for the three microwave (~ 10 years models) that I measured.

RE: Is microwave cooking safe?
Well according to my point of view, I think that microwave are quite safe for cooking, while many health experts believe that microwaves are not good for health, and thus should never be use, You should always cook in your microwave using covered containers. Covered containers prevent food from splattering over the interior surface of your microwave oven.
